Celebrate Pride With Emi
Happy Pride Month, friends! At Emi, we’re so happy that our community includes all kinds of couples. More than ever, we should celebrate how far the LGBTQ community has come and how our relationships are thriving.
I’m proud to be able to live openly as a lesbian, to be able to introduce people to my wife, but just because our relationship is legally recognized, that doesn’t mean things are always easy. We can celebrate our pride and be honest about the ways we have to work hard to make our relationships work.
Who We Are
The LGBTQ community encompasses individuals from all walks of life, with a 2016 Pew survey estimating that about 4.1% of adults in the United States identify as LGBTQ — and this number is slowly rising. What’s more, about 10% of same-sex couples today are legally married, which is about 60% of those couples who are cohabiting. About 30% of LGBTQ couples are also raising children together.
While the LGBTQ community is, on average, about a decade younger than the overall population, with an average age of 37.3 years, broadly speaking we look a lot like the rest of the population. We’re part of much larger communities, represent all races, religions, and abilities, but we also continue to face discrimination at work, at school, and in the general course of our daily lives, and that can put added strain on our relationships.
Sticking Together Through Stress
One of the realities that weighs on LGBTQ individuals and our relationships are the countless microaggressions we experience every day; like other minority groups, we’re subject to assumptions, stereotypes, and exclusion in countless small ways. When I call my bank, for example, they assume my joint account is with my husband and depending on the day, I don’t always correct them — because I don’t know how I’ll be treated if I do. And this pales in comparison to in-person interactions. At the same time, the number of people who believe that LGBTQ individuals face serious discrimination is falling. Perception and reality aren’t keeping up and that can put pressure on our relationships, even if just subconsciously.
Little daily efforts like Emi’s relationship exercises can make a big difference when coping with these daily stresses, providing couples with moments to come together. Whether we’re taking a moment to highlight positive moments in our day or offering a small encouraging touch or a kiss, it’s important that we build up our relationships in a world that sometimes tries to tear them down.
June is Pride Month, which gives us an extra reason to celebrate love in all its forms. But while love may be easy, relationships are challenging — and that’s where Emi comes in. At Emi, we want every couple to have the tools they need to thrive, even in the face of adversity. Fly the flag of your love proudly. Emi will always be there to support you.
